Simple Methods in Removing a Rack Pinion in a 1995 Honda Civic

Posted by: Admin  /  Category: Auto Tips

Typically, the 1995 Honda Civic uses a rack pinion steering system just to make the front wheels turn. It’s actually a self-contained unit that connects to the wheels via the tie rods and to the steering wheel via the intermediate shaft. The entire rack must be removed from the car to be rebuilt or replaced when the steering system goes out.

Here are the methodologies to be followed in removing a rack pinion; park the Civic on a level, paved surface, pull the E-brake handle on the center console to apply the emergency brake, lift the front of the Civic with a jack, put jack stands underneath the chassis, remove the lug nuts from the wheels with a tire iron then pull off the wheels, unbolt the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles on each side of the suspension with a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, separate each tie rod from the knuckle with a ball joint separator and the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, look under the dash and remove the clamps around the steering column with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, move to the engine compartment and unbolt the intermediate shaft from the column and the gear box with the ratchet, remove the power steering lines running to the rack and pinion with a line wrench, unbolt the rack and pinion from the chassis with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, lower the rack away from the underside of the Civic.
